Camping at Doran Beach: Our Favorite Sonoma Coast Getaway (Site 61 Review)
Sometimes the best adventures aren't the ones that take you hundreds of miles from home—they're the ones waiting right in your own backyard.
That was exactly the case during our recent camping trip to Doran Beach Campground in Sonoma County Regional Parks. We stayed at Site 61 in the Cove Campground, and from the moment we pulled in, we knew we had found something special.
If you're looking for a family-friendly coastal campground with beach access, clean facilities, beautiful views, and a relaxed Sonoma County vibe, Doran Beach deserves a spot on your list.
Site 61: A Hidden Gem Under the Cypress Trees
Site 61 may have just become one of our favorite campsites on the Sonoma Coast.
Nestled beneath a beautiful grove of windswept cypress trees, the site offers a perfect blend of shade, privacy, and coastal views. The trees create a cozy, sheltered campsite while still allowing glimpses of the harbor and beach beyond.
We loved waking up with a view of the harbor, enjoying our morning coffee under the trees, and ending our days gathered around the fire ring while the ocean breeze drifted through camp.
The site includes a picnic table, fire ring, plenty of room for tents, and is pet-friendly, making it ideal for families looking to unplug and reconnect.
Clean Facilities and Friendly Staff
One thing that can make or break a camping trip is the condition of the facilities, and Doran Beach exceeded our expectations.
The camp host was incredibly kind and welcoming, and it was obvious they take pride in keeping the campground running smoothly.
The bathrooms and showers were exceptionally clean and conveniently located near our site. There's even a lit walkway leading to the facilities, which made those nighttime bathroom trips much easier for both kids and adults.
The Beach Is Just Steps Away

One of the biggest reasons we love Doran Beach is how easy it is to access the beach.
A short walk across the road brings you to a massive stretch of sand with plenty of room to explore. Whether your family loves beach walks, flying kites, building sandcastles, fishing, or simply watching the waves roll in, there is more than enough space for everyone.
The beach never felt crowded, even on a busy weekend.
We spent hours walking along the shoreline, watching boats in the harbor, searching for shells, and simply enjoying the slower pace that comes with being near the ocean.
A Unique Morning Wake-Up Call
Doran Beach sits next to the Coast Guard station, so around 8:00 each morning you'll hear military-style announcements and a camp horn.
At first we weren't sure what to expect, but honestly, it became part of the experience. It's not obnoxiously loud and almost feels like an old-fashioned camp bugle signaling the start of another day of adventure.
It's one of those quirky little details that makes Doran Beach unique.
Sauna By The Sea

One of the coolest surprises of our weekend happened Saturday morning.
A beautiful wood-fired mobile sauna called Sauna By The Sea pulled up near the beach, and we had the chance to chat with the owner.
He explained how visitors alternate between the hot sauna and cold plunges in the Pacific Ocean—a wellness experience that has become increasingly popular along the coast.
Not only was the sauna absolutely beautiful, but the owner was incredibly friendly and passionate about what he does.
After seeing it in person and learning more about it, we've already decided we'll be booking a session during our next camping trip. It looks like the perfect way to start a coastal morning before spending the day exploring the beach.
If you're camping at Doran Beach on a weekend, it's definitely worth checking out.
The Perfect Stop on the Way Home: Estero Cafe

Before heading home, we made one final stop that was honestly the perfect ending to our weekend: Estero Cafe in Valley Ford.
If you're health-conscious, pay attention to ingredients, or simply appreciate food made from scratch, this place is worth going out of your way for.
What immediately stood out to us was their commitment to quality ingredients. Estero Cafe proudly cooks everything on the griddle in clarified butter, fries in local beef tallow, and sources ingredients from small family farms throughout Sonoma and Marin counties. They are also seed oil free and HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) free—something that's becoming harder and harder to find when eating out.
Their philosophy is simple: good food starts with good ingredients.
Every plate is crafted from scratch using seasonal produce, local organic eggs, sustainably raised artisan meats, and dairy from nearby farms. You can truly taste the difference.
The atmosphere feels warm, welcoming, and perfectly in line with the slower pace of West Sonoma County. It's the kind of place where locals gather after a morning at the beach and visitors discover a restaurant they'll continue recommending long after they leave.
We'll absolutely be making it a tradition to stop there every time we camp at Doran Beach.

Final Thoughts

Camping isn't always about traveling far away. Sometimes it's about slowing down, sitting around a campfire, listening to the ocean, and spending quality time together.
From our cozy campsite beneath the cypress trees to beach walks, harbor views, campfires, Sauna By The Sea, and brunch at Estero Cafe, this trip reminded us why we love exploring our own backyard.
Between camping at Doran Beach, discovering a mobile sauna on the coast, and enjoying one of the healthiest and most delicious brunches we've had in Sonoma County, this weekend felt less like a local camping trip and more like a mini coastal retreat.
We'll absolutely be back—and if you can snag Site 61, we highly recommend it.
